Dry eye syndrome can be caused by a number of different factors (age, genetics, and environmental). Often, dry eye syndrome is a function of the aging process especially during menopause in women. Other causes include living in a dry, dusty, or windy climate such as the Southwest. Several diseases also may cause dry eye syndrome. Regular contact lens use has also been attributed to this problem. So, as you can see, there are a great number of factors that may cause this irritating syndrome.

Although there isn't a cure ,per se, for dry eye syndrome, eliminating the underlying cause has been successful in many cases. Artificial tear drops are often prescribed to help mange some of the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. In more severe cases, lacrimal plugs or surgery may be indicated to help relieve symptoms. Obviously, you'll want to see your doctor as soon as possible whenever you begin to feel continuous irritation in your eyes.
